What is the Program About?
This August, we’re excited to offer engaging classes for students in grades 2-7. With sessions running from August 3-9 for grades 2-4 and August 11-17 for grades 5-7, students can explore a variety of subjects including Science, Math, Public Speaking, Art, Writing, Python, Robotics, Mandarin, and more! Each day features three dynamic classes in the afternoon and evening, all for just a $15 entry fee. Don’t miss this opportunity for your child to learn, grow, and have fun this summer!

Mathematics
Benjamin Xie, Grade 9
Stuyvesant High School
This rigorous course will advance students’ skills in second through fourth-grade mathematics using challenging problems above what would be found in a regular classroom setting, building the foundations for intermediate and high school topics in accordance with the newest state learning standards. This course also creates an environment where questioning is incentivized to build strong interest and discussion around mathematics
.
Qualifications: Benjamin Xie has won numerous mathematics-related and academic awards and honors, including Academic Excellence in Math, Student of the Month (Algebra I during December 2023), and valedictorian for both his elementary and intermediate schools.
Environmental Science
Aylin Khvan, Grade 9
Topics that will be covered and elaborated fully on (included but are not limited to) are: pollution, water cycle, climate change, living things, ecosystems, energy, sustainability, ecology, biology, atmosphere, etc.
Qualifications: Won the Science Fair in 2023 and went to the Queens Hall of Science to represent my district, Living Environment Student of the Month, and took and passed the Living Environment Regents early.
Writing
Yogi Singh, Grade 10, West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North
This imaginative course will enhance students’ skills in creative writing, taking them beyond the boring classroom experience; after all, imagination is everything. Our course develops students’ skills in storytelling, sentence structure, and character development, yet also teaches students to enjoy the process of writing! By the end of the course, students will have developed a deeper appreciation for the power of the pen, improved their writing skills, and gained confidence in sharing their work with others.
Qualifications: Yogi Singh’s passion for writing was recognized when his fictional narrative was selected for the Mercer County Teen Arts Festival. This achievement led to his piece being selected for the NJ Teen Arts Festival in May 2023, which is a statewide showcase/competition. At just 14 years old, he presented his narrative to a college audience and received amazing feedback from a professional author! In addition, Yogi achieved the milestone of publishing his very own book on Amazon Kindle at the young age of 13, marking his success as an author.
Art
Delphia Huang, Grade 11
Langley High School
This course is designed to help students illustrate portraits. The skills learned in this course will allow students to create visually appealing works of art and establish a strong foundation for painting and drawing portraits. By the end of the course, students will be well-equipped to understand basic facial anatomy and how to sketch and color them. I’m so excited to help eager artists achieve their goals!
Qualifications: As a high school student who scored a 5 on the AP 2D Art and Design Portfolio, I am committed to helping others enhance their artistic abilities. I am a gold key winner of the Scholastic Art Awards in 2022, and a published artist in the Blick Celebrating Art Spring 2024 Anthologies. Having participated in the STAMPS Pre-college Program for developing art portfolios, I am well-qualified to teach and lead a team of students. By August 2nd, I will have taught and assisted children in their art journey at the Lulu Kids Art Studio. Next year, I will serve as a Vice President at my school’s National Art Honors Society.
Public Speaking
Kavya Bhat, Grade 10
Hunter College High School
This course aims to advance students' public speaking skills and teach speech techniques that they can use in official Speech competitions. The writing and delivery skills learned in this course are applicable in not only public speaking competitions, but will enhance any speech given by the student, as well as furthering their ability to communicate effectively in team settings. Through analyzing successful speeches, dissecting moving performances, and understanding methods of persuasion through engaging and interactive lessons, students will leave this class understanding how to effectively convey their ideas to a wider audience.
Qualifications: Member of Hunter College High School’s speech team. Competed at the most tournaments of any member on the team at various prestigious universities such as Princeton, Columbia, and Stanford. Was the only speech member to compete at the state level this year. Ranked in the top 10 in Program Oral Interpretation at Stanford. Won 1st place in a Diwali speech competition. Will continue to compete in the fall.

Python
Emma Wu, Grade 10
Thomas Jefferson School of Science and Technology
This course is meant as an introduction to Python programming for beginners. It will cover the fundamental concepts and practices necessary to start coding in Python effectively. The essential skills learned in this class will give students a head start in all high school CS courses and set the foundation for any future programming endeavors. Through actively participating in class and receiving feedback from the teacher, students will learn about Syntax, Comments, Variables, Data Types, Numbers, Casting, Strings, Booleans, Operators, Lists, Dictionaries, If… Else statements, While loops, For loops, and Functions.
Qualifications: Has prior experience in teaching students the basics of Python and Java. Part of TJHSST’s Intermediate Computer Team and Computer Security Club. Has participated in many high school level competitions such as USACO, ACSL, CALICO, PCLASSIC, WIDENER, and more. Team achieved first place in the ACSL Junior 5 division.
Mathematics
Sarah Lin, Grade 12
The Bronx High School of Science
This course focuses on providing an introduction to students to algebraic concepts. This course will involve an introduction to variables, rational expressions, graphing, real numbers, factoring methods, and quadratic equations. Through this course, students will develop a general understanding of algebra, be ready to take the Algebra Regents, and obtain foundational knowledge for future mathematical courses.
Qualifications: Received a 5 on the AP Calculus BC Exam, received a 100 on the Algebra II Regents, tutors Honors Algebra II and Trigonometry during the school year
Writing
Rachel Sun, Grade 11
Chantilly High School
This course focuses on developing students' writing through using and learning basic writing conventions. The purpose of learning writing conventions is to help students improve and strengthen their ability to write. Knowing how to properly express thoughts through writing is an essential skill needed throughout the entirety of a student's school life and in their future. Students will build off of and learn grammar structure, proper use of punctuation, and how to correct and fix fragmented and run-on sentences through typed assignments, discussions and interactive activities.
Qualifications: Prior music tutoring experience with a similar age range, Music Honors Society, A in honors English, exemplary writing in research and literary analysis, tutored and taught friends grammar, and long term commitment to the violin for 8 years.
Mandarin
Catherine Wang, Grade 11
Forests Hills High School
This course focuses on helping students learn Mandarin Chinese. The course will cover basic to intermediate language skills, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will engage in various activities to practice their pronunciation and conversational skills. By the end of the course, students should be able to hold basic conversations in Mandarin and have a foundational understanding of Chinese grammar and vocabulary.
Qualifications: In AP Chinese got a 5, and have been learning Chinese for at least 8 years. Have a few certificates for finishing learning Chinese. Speaks fluent Chinese.
Robotics
Benjamin Tangkamolsuk, Grade 10
Denla British School
The robotics course by Benjamin Tangkamolsuk is a course run throughout the Teddy Bear Community Summer Program aimed to teach students the link between STEM subjects through robotics. The classes will cover robotics theory, engineering concepts and designs, and programming concepts. By opening the world of robotics, it demonstrates to students the application of in-class concepts into real-world practice, further enhancing academic excellence throughout traditional subjects. The program will utilize theories from VEX IQ Robotics, a professional robotics competition program, designed specifically for robotics education. During the sessions, students will learn engineering concepts such as drivetrains, gear ratios, for example. Students will also be able to learn robotics programming and experiment and explore with robotics programming real-time from the comfort of their homes though virtual robotics simulation programs like VEX VR. Leadership
Benjamin Tangkamolsuk, Grade 10
Denla British School
The leadership course by Benjamin Tangkamsoluk runs throughout the Teddy Bear Community Summer Program aimed to teach students general leadership skills that can be used for all environments. The class will cover the proper mindset of a leader, Organizational Leadership and much more, equipping students with an in-depth yet broad range of skills in relation to leadership, allowing students to be more confident in leading group projects, as well as building early development skills for vocational uses in corporate environments.
Qualifications: Ben has prior experience in a number leadership positions in and out of his school, ranging from being the Chief Marketing Officer at Teddy Bear Community, Journal Officer at Medicine Community and Research, Marketing Director at Teenvisor, Director of Events Department at Foni Global, Lead Author for 3 Academic Research Papers, Chair of School Council, School Newspaper Lead Editor for 2 Years and School House Captain.
